Chapter one: The Unwelcome 'Guest'
It's hard enough being a teenager in a new city, without being the sole carer for your baby brother.

The Williams' family had made the move to Starlight Shores not even a week before, where Lexi's parents were hoping to not only make it as famous Singers, but provide a better life for their children when tragedy hit. Her parents were completely unaware of a dangerous prisoner being loose in the city not long before they moved in. When curled up on the sofa in the living room one night and kids playing, the criminal broke into the Williams' home. Sean awake to a deep voice and shouted for Angela to hide. She headed straight for the kids who were in Lexi's bedroom and told them to be silent and locked them in. Lexi could see the mans face before the door swung shut pointing a gun at her father. Thankfully little Joshua was having a nap on her bed, so he didn't make a sound. As for Lexi her heart was racing so much she thought she was going to pass out. She sat knees at chest and hands over her mouth, trying to keep silent while her baby brother laid fast asleep in a blanket behind her. She heard her mother run back to her father's aid but, gunshots, one shot after another, a high pitched scream, a cry, someone falling to their knees. Lexi could clearly hear her mum begging before another shot goes off. Silence fell upon the home, no silence that lexi had ever experienced. Usually silence is a peaceful thing, relaxing and calming. For Lexi this silence was the opposite, terrifying, wishing to hear the voice of her parents, to know they were okay. Suddenly footsteps could be heard coming from the living room, approaching her bedroom door. The knob was slowly turning infront of her and a man breathing heavily drawing from a cigerette and exhaling could be heard clearly.

Lexi feels her stomach turning and tightening with every twist and turn of the door knob. Her instinct is no matter what happens she will protect her baby brother at all cost. In the far corner of her wardrobe was an old baseball bat. She was always terrible at sports, but it never stopped her father trying to encourage her to find one she liked. She's not even sure why she kept the bat, she hated baseball, but now this was her only weapon. The house was old but sturdy and obviously built well with love and care. Every room had strong heavy doors, not like the ones they manufacture these days. The intruder became inpatient and began to kick and punch the door. Eventually he lost his temper and reloads his gun. He shoots frantically at the door lock. Joshua jumps awake and is about to scream but, Lexi covers his mouth in time. Joshua can feel his sister shaking in fear and hugs her tight and tries to stay quiet too. She blocks her baby brothers ears and leans over him, using her body to sheild him. Clicking, a grumbling voice, a shuffling noises and more clicking. The man has ran out of bullets and has no spares left. He punches the door out of frustration and although it rattles and shakes, it will not be moved. Unable to hear anything he backs off and begins searching the rest of the house for resources. After a few minutes the front door is broken down and an officer aims for his back telling him to drop the gun and get on his knees. It seems although he used a silencer the neighbours heard the cries and screams and were concerned.

Lexi's brother has said nothing, he is so scared and confused, he just clutches at his sister. He really wants his parents and begins to disobey and try to get to the bedroom door, he points and the key hole and back to his sister, "locked.. locked?"
"Joshy, you got to stay here" she replied to him, "look here, hold onto Teddy, I promise everything will be okay, I can hear an officer mum and dad will be safe now." Joshua makes no more noise but instead nods slowly, he turns around and goes and sits on the floor beside the bed, cuddling teddy tight to his chest hoping he will protect him. Lexi faces the door again and clentches her fists. She stares at the door knob for some time trying to fight the fear that is overwhelming her. She shakes as she slowly unlocks the door. Another gun shot goes off, then another. She panics and relocks the door and hides under the bed with Joshua. After a few minutes of what sounds like someone trying to catch their breath and recompose themselves, light footsteps aproach lexis bedroom door. "My name is Officer Nancy, are you okay in there? I have radio'd for paramedics but I need your help to keep pressure on your mother's wounds. Lexi finds the courage and comes out from under the bed, opening the door she is more than overvelmed to see a woman standing before her in a police uniform. Seeing that she is still in shock and shaking the officer hugs her tight and lets her know she is safe. "Hey listen, your mum really needs you to be brave right now, I need to check your dad, I need you to keep pressure on your mums wounds, could you do that for me?" Lexi nods and turns to tell her brother to stay put, who is still under the bed clutching his teddy. Sweat drips down Lexi's neck and back as she follows the officer into the living room. The sight of blood everywhere nearly makes her faint but she sees her mum in urgent need of help. She is not responsive but still breathing, just barley. Lexi puts pressure on her wounds and talks to her mother continously until the ambulances arrive, begging her to keep fighting. The officer see's Sean took a fatal shot to the head as she first expected when she glanced over. she covers him with the blanket that was hanging over the arm of the sofa, to try safe lexi from more trauma.

Chapter Two: The aftermath

In the waiting area of A&E at Holy Memorial Hospital Joshua is sat at the reception desk 'helping' the nurses who find him too adorable. Lexi is laying on chairs as a nurse walks past and puts a blanket over her, "Try get some sleep love, your mum will be out of surgery soon" she says while rubbing her shoulder. Cuddling up to the soft blanket, although it is still holding in the cold from the cupboard it was previously folded up in, Lexi tries to get some sleep, but her mind is running in circles. Everything happened so fast today, one minute she was the happiest she has been, a new adventure for the whole family and now...
She looks over to her brother who doesn't seem to really understand what is going on, maybe that is truly for the best, she wishes she could be just as blissfully ignorant too about this whole situation. Just as she is nodding off the surgeon operating on her mother comes over with the nurses, one nurse carrying Joshua. Sitting up so fast making herself slightly dizzy she stares into the surgeon's eyes, they seem sad, he looks at the floor and then sits down next to her. "Miss Williams, may we talk in the office other there?" The surgeon rests one hand on her shoulder and holds her other hand. Lexi can tell just by looking at him he has something to say he wishes he did not need to say at all. She knows what he is going to say too but, not wanting to her brother to overhear she agrees to go into the office. The surgeon sits infront of her holding her hands and begins to explain, "I have, had a young daughter around your age...She was a kind, caring young girl just like you. You have a strong character Lexi, I hope it will help you in these dark times." he sighs and then continues. "I am very sorry Lexi we tried our best to save your mother. She had lost alot of blood, she had clots on the brain, she put up a fight Lexi with all she had, but she is with your father now." "You had a daughter?" Lexi replies, as if partially ignoring what was just said. "..Y. Y..Yes. She died a few weeks ago now. Same guy who killed your parents. If it helps at all justice has been served, he was pronounced dead at your house. He will go to hell for what he has done, no more running and hiding just to hurt more people." She recalls seeing him laying on the ground, the mans face comes back to Lexi's mind as if haunting her. Sunken green eyes with bags underneath, slightly grey skin an unhealthy looking man. His hair light brown with traces of grey, looking untamed and greasy, a gang tattoo on his neck, a cigarette lit sat, perching on the right side of his mouth. Anger begins to boil within her until she begins to shake, her eyes water and she bursts into tears. The nurse who gave her the blanket earlier is watching through the window and comes in hugging her as if she was her own child. The surgeon leaves her be, rushing to another emergency but as he goes he leaves her with a word of advice "Lexi your brother needs you more than ever now, you must be strong for his sake."
